Three men who were arrested for the gangrape and murder of a 21-year-old college student in Kamduni two years ago were given death sentences by a Kolkata court today. Three other convicts involved in the gruesome case got life imprisonment.

Additional Sessions Judge Sanchita Sarkar handed out capital sentences to Aminul Ali, Saiful Ali and Ansar Ali, while Imanul Islam, Aminul Islam and Bhola Naskar were sentenced to life imprisonment.

The gangrape and murder happened in Kamduni, about 50 km from Kolkata, when the young woman was returning home after appearing for an examination at her college on June 7, 2013. She was a second year BA student, and was pulled into a farm by the rapists after alighting from a bus.

Her mutilated body was found the next morning in the farm. The incident had sparked widespread outrage in the state amid serious concerns over women’s safety.
