Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan are but a few of the prominent Aam Aadmi Party leaders who have either been expelled from the party or left of their own accord. AAP leaders who were closely associated with the party from its inception barely three years ago, have left citing issues varying from dictatorial functioning to sexism.

Here is the list of AAP leaders that left the party.

1. Yogendra Yadav – Senior party leader, former member of Political Affairs Committee (PAC), former member of University Grants Commission and National Advisory Council on Right to Education Act. He was expelled from the party after weeks of dissent. The party officially expelled him on Monday April 20, stating it was not satisfied with the response to the show cause notice it issued to him.

2. Prashant Bhushan – Former member of PAC, noted lawyers and advocate for anti-corruption, environmental causes and human rights. He was expelled from the party after weeks of dissent. 3. Vinod Kumar Binny – One of the first leaders to leave AAP. He cited reasons ranging from Arvind Kejriwal’s dictatorial leadership, to betraying its principles.

4. Medha Patkar – She quit the party because of the infighting that saw two founder members Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav being voted off the PAC. She also commented on Kejriwal, saying he shouldn’t have gone into politics.

5. Ashwini Upadhyay – Another senior leader of AAP, he was expelled for anti-party behaviour. He alleged the party was in a secret alliance with Congress and the dubious donations Manish Sisodia’s NGO got.

6. Shazia Ilmi Ilmi, who was one of the founding members of the AAP, resigned in May 2014 and said the party has deviated from its core issues. Ilmi said the “lack of inner democracy” triggered her resignation.

7. Ashok Agarwal – He was a member of the national executive of AAP. He quit the party claiming it had become directionless and functioned like a private limited company.

8. Madhu Bhaduri – Former diplomat, she quit the AAP after the controversial incident at Khirki extension. She said she was displeased with the way the party treated women.

9. Captain GR Gopinath – He resigned from AAP after a series of differences on matters with party head, Arvind Kejriwal. “I am not in favour of the recent actions of Mr Kejriwal, and have decided to quit. The party head cannot just shoot and scoot in politics,” he had said.

10. Anjali Damani – Damania, an AAP leader from Maharashtra, resigned from the party after a TV channel aired a sting of party convenor Kejriwal allegedly trying to buy out Congress MLAs last year to form government in Delhi. She said she backed Kejriwal for his principles not horse-trading.

11. Anand Kumar – Retired professor of sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University and a founding member of AAP. He was expelled from the party because of anti-party activities along with Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan
