1. Casino Royale (2006)

Based on Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel, the 1954 TV series named Casino Royale, and the subsequent 1967 spy comedy by the same name, eventually saw Daniel Craig take over the role of Bond for the 2006 remake. Which clearly put him on the map as one of the best ever. He was cold, tough and most importantly very, very violent. 

2. The Departed (2006)

The Departed is a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong crime-thriller film directed by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, reinvented by Martin Scorsese. The cast for the remake is perhaps the gem that makes this it outdo its predecessor. Check out both for a series of amazing crime films.

3. Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

With a cast that included Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra, Ocean’s 11 was a 1960’s heist comedy directed by Lewis Milestone. But, it’s the 2001 Steven Soderbergh remake that spawned the movie into a trilogy wit a cult following. They’re even planning to gender swap the characters for a new film franchise. 

4. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

The 2005 British-American musical fantasy film, an adaptation of the Roald Dahl book, is actually a remake of the original 1971 release, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Needless to say, Johnny Depp made things much darker in his reprisal. 

5. Scent of a Woman (1992)

The remake of the 1974 Italian style comedy drama film directed by Dino Risi, Martin Brest’s retelling starring Al Pacino would be any film buff’s pick. Delivering an iconic performance that went down in cinema history, the remake put the original on the map in more ways than one.

6. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

The original British-American horror musical released in 1979, based on the play by Christopher Bond, saw itself being remade by Tim Burton in his classic style, starring Johnny Depp. The plot follows a barber who doubles as a serial killer. But Burton’s grim undertones made it what it is. Also, the songs were pretty catchy as well. 

7. Scarface (1983)

The 1932 original of Scarface was a American Pre-Code gangster film starring Paul Muni and directed by Howard Hawks. Of course, the remake by Brian De Palma with Al Pacino made the movie legendary. But, we suggest you check out the original too. You wouldn’t want to mess with Pachino’s little friend, would you?

8. The Manchurian Candidate (2004)

The 1962 release of the The Manchurian Candidate directed by John Frankenheimer was a snowballing success for its time, to begin with. But, in 2004 when Jonathan Demme re-envisioned the movie, it was slow to success, but definitely steady and told a clean and clear story. We suggest viewing both movies and judging for yourself.

9. 3:10 To Yuma (2007)

Directed by James Mangold, 3:10 To Yuma instantly created a mass following for itself with its release in 2007. The original, which was a blockbusting American Western film was first released in 1957, and directed by  Delmer Daves. The remake took a much grittier turn and was better for it. 

10. The Thing (1982)

John Carpenter took the 1950’s film to the next level when he directed his version of The Thing. Originally known as The Thing From Outer Space, the original film was great for its time, but the Carpenter version cranked up all the dials to 11 and how! Even as just a visual effects spectacle, The Thing was a masterclass in horror and even to this day, the practical effects will send shivers down your spine.
