Kolkata police on Monday filed two non-bailable cases against Bharatiya Janata Party’s spokesperson Nupur Sharma for posting fake and misleading pictures of ongoing unrest in West Bengal on social media, reported Hindustan Times.

The cases were registered against her at Gariahat and Regent Park police stations. As per a report by Times Now police is yet to take any action against her.

Sharma has been booked under IPC sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion), 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion), 471(forgery), 505 and 465.

What led to the arrests?

On July 8-9, Nupur Sharma, came under fire from Twitter users for allegedly passing off pictures of the 2002 Gujarat riots as that of the violence in West Bengal’s Basirhat.

In her post she also urged common masses to join protest against the rising lawlessness in Bengal and also used the hashtag #SaveHindus, giving the post a communal colour.
