That Bollywood loves making movies around sports is popular knowledge. From Chak De! India to Sultan and now the upcoming Dangal, there isn’t a dearth of such Hindi films. And post the success of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, biopics on famous sports personalities are the newest norm.

While Aamir Khan will bring to light the story of Mahavir Phogat and his daughters Geeta and Babita in Dangal, Akshay Kumar too has joined the list of actors playing sports personalities on the big screen.

Recently, Akshay Kumar tweeted the first poster of his upcoming film Gold that releases on August 15, 2018.

The film is produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani and will be directed by Reema Kagti.

While the film’s poster reveals that it’s based on India’s first-ever gold win at the Olympics, little else is known about the movie.

However, as per a report in DNA, Akshay Kumar plays the role of hockey legend Balbir Singh in the movie.

For those who don’t know, Balbir Singh was part of the hockey team that won the gold medal for India in the 1948 Olympics. He also was the Vice-Captain of the team in 1952 Olympics and the Captain of the team at the 1956 Olympics, winning Team India a gold medal both these times too.

Sadly, unlike Dhyan Chand, not many people know about Balbir Singh and it’s his story that Akshay Kumar would be bringing to light in Gold

While Akshay has successfully attempted period films such as Airlift and Rustom in the recent past, it’ll be interesting to see him take on this role.

We’re majorly excited about this one.
