Bihar Class 12 Humanities 'topper' Ruby Rai who is under judicial custody in connection with a cheating scam was denied bail by the Juvenile Justice Board in Patna on Wednesday.
As the three-member bench announced the decision, Ruby broke down after seeing her family in the court room.
According to reports, Ruby had pleaded in her bail appeal that she should be granted bail as she is a minor. However, assistant public prosecutor Vinay Kumar, appearing on behalf of the special investigation team (SIT) investigating the case, argued that granting bail to her might lead to tampering of evidence and may hamper the probe.
All through the hearing, she kept crying that she wanted to go home. She also had a conversation with her octogenarian grandfather in which she asked him to take her home, reports Telegraph.
On June 25, Ruby was arrested by Special Investigation Team (SIT) as she emerged from a re-test of Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB). A Patna court had then issued a non-bailable warrant against Ruby and four toppers of the intermediate examination in connection with the exam scam. The other students are absconding.
However, on July 4, she was released from Patna's Berur jail and sent to a juvenile remand home after it was found that she was a minor.
The girl along with the Science stream topper Saurabh had come into limelight after they gave ridiculous answers to questions about their subjects in a video by a TV news channel which went viral. This led to the authorities unearthing an examination marks scam racket and subsequently a probe was ordered.
