“When life gives you lemons, you watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S!” said nobody ever. But if someone had, it could’ve and would’ve made complete sense. No matter how many times you watch the show, it always feels as special as the first time. Such is the magic of F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

We all have our favourite characters and even the slightest mention of the show can get us excited. Haven’t we all binged watch the entire series, like a billion times already?

The love for F.R.I.E.N.D.S has had people hooked on to the show for decades and like any other relationship, the one with F.R.I.E.N.D.S also involves rational and analytical thinking.

A result of that are the various fan theories, some of which are dark and bizarre!

If you’re a F.R.I.E.N.D.S fanatic, then I’d warn you to take these theories with a pinch of salt.

Here are 8 F.R.I.E.N.D.S fan theories that’ll make you think harder and see the show in a different light all together:

1. Ross lost Ben‘s custody because he was a homophobe.

To be honest, Ross wasn’t the best father. But we won’t get into that.

A fan theory suggests that Ross‘ homophobia resulted in him loosing his son’s custody. The fact that Ben did not appear in the last two and a half seasons made people think of this. We’re all aware of Ross‘ animosity towards Susan (his ex wife’s partner) and how that made his relationship with Carol difficult, post the divorce.

If you think harder, it might just make sense!

2. The show is a product of delusion of a couple of patients in an asylum, trying to escape their reality.

A school of thought believes that all the characters had their respective psychological problems and the show is actually a result of the common delusion they share.

Monica‘s issues with her body, Rachel‘s apparent daddy-issues, Chandler‘s social awkwardness, Joey‘s emotional vulnerability, Phoebe‘s disturbed childhood and Ross‘ commitment and abandonment issues helped all of them to drift away to a world where they overcame their respective problems.

3. The show is in Phoebe’s head who, by the way, is a meth addict.

After binge-watching the series a couple of times, a F.R.I.E.N.D.S fan came up with this theory that went wildly viral.

The theory claimed that Phoebe, a meth-head, imagined all the 10 seasons while sitting by the window in Central Perk. Every time Phoebe gave references of being an outsider in the group, she projected her ideas on to the lives of others. In the show’s final scene when all of them are walking away from Central Perk, the guys make a statement about ‘the crazy lady that always stares at them.’

Phoebe is believed to be that crazy lady.

4. The mystery behind how the gang always got their usual table!

It is believed that the story behind why the group always managed to get the center table at Central Perk goes beyond the fact that they were regulars at the coffee shop.

Despite the fact that Rachel and Joey had worked at Central Perk, it was actually Gunther who reserved the table for the group on a permanent basis. Why, you ask? Because this way he could get a direct view of Rachel, whom we knew he had a major crush on!

5. Monica was Judy Gellar‘s love-child.

A redditor pointed out that Judy Gellar‘s (Monica‘s mother) attitude towards Monica wasn’t warm enough because she reminded her of a past.

It is believed that Monica was Judy‘s love-child from an ex-lover and therefore, she was never as special as Ross for Mrs. Gellar. This, along with Ross‘ academic brilliance, made Monica the less-favoured child.

6. Ross has Asperger’s Syndrome.

Another one of the dark theories, this makes way into the world of F.R.I.E.N.D.S due to Ross‘ socially awkward behaviour.

A number of people have pointed out that despite being academically gifted, Ross found it difficult to cope up with his social surroundings. He was always a part of the group but was never very close to anyone in particular. Not considering Rachel, given that the nature of his relationship with her went beyond friendship.

7. Phoebe was the smartest one in the lot.

Phoebe would make dim jokes but at the end of the day, we knew who the “puppet master of the group” was!

While Monica would look like the controller, it was actually Phoebe calling the shots. Also, don’t forget the discussion on evolution that Phoebe had with Ross. She got the man thinking hard!

8. Porn barons burned down Phoebe‘s apartment.

Weeks before Rachel and Phoebe‘s apartment caught fire in season 6, Phoebe discovered that her twin sister Ursula had become a porn star. Phoebe being Phoebe, went ahead and claimed Ursula‘s payment cheques at the porn company and ended up giving her address to the guys up there. Soon, they find it all out and the apartment mysteriously catches fire.

Say goodbye to unsolved mysteries, now!

There’s always a flip-side to all things great but it’s totally up to you to believe in these theories or not.
