The largest of its kind in Asia and the second largest motor show in the world, the Auto Expo needs no introduction. It is a paradise for all the petroheads out there and being one myself, I’ve never missed the event since 1998. This biannual ritual has endured and never have I returned feeling disappointed, such is the beauty of it. Here’s everything I experienced at the 2016 edition.

For starters, it takes you off the road completely

No matter which gate you choose to enter from, the madness begins right away. I entered from Gate No.11 which had the off road track set up and all the 4x4s ruling it.

The Ford Machine- Built Tough

The first hall I entered was the one I was looking forward to the most. All the muscle I’ve ever wanted to see was right in front of me. With the launch of the Ford Mustang, the American muscle in the Indian market, Ford has taken a major step into the brand’s image build up.

Talking about brand image, the car which goes with the company’s tagline of being tough, the Ford Endeavour was also up for display and it is definitely going to shake the sales of existing rivals.

When the Koreans come calling

Hyundai became a household name in India with the introduction of the  Santro. They introduced the Hyundai Tucson which was not a very successful product back then but looking at the SUV segment market, the Tucson would be a great product to buy. Also in attendance was the luxury sedan Genesis.

Their racing concept which looked no less than a futuristic supercar was also on display.

The Passabilities

The madness never ends there. With the Mustang being launched, Chevrolet didn’t pass up the opportunity to bring the Bumblebee of Transformers fame, the Chevy Camaro, to the party.

Being one of the sponsors of Manchester United, football had to be there. They set up a mini football field for their audience to try their passing abilities.

“Daddy ki karaan, petrol khatam hi ni hunda”

As far as India is concerned, Maruti is an iconic brand which back in the day had us queuing up to get our hands on a Maruti 800. They’ve kept up with the times by launching their game-changing compact SUV, the Brezza.

The Power of Dreams

Honda launched their luxury sedan, the Honda Accord, in a whole new avatar and I personally feel that this is the most beautiful version of the car till date. The compact SUV segment has also been targeted with the launch of the Honda BR-V.

Talking about dreams, with their Jazz Racing Edition, Honda showed the possibilities of turning your daily ride into a not-so-regular one. Also on display was their cruiser bike, keeping in mind the way the two-wheeled world is changing around here.

The Japanese Invasion

Toyota established themselves with the evergreen Toyota Qualis and since then haven’t just sustained but have also progressed to greater levels. The launch of the Innova Crysta, the updated version of the rock solid market catering MUV, was launched while the Toyota Fortuner, the Toyota Landcruiser Prado and the Landcruiser VX were also on display.

They also marked their love for the green environment with the updated version of the Toyota Prius and the concept version of the MRAI.

JEEP

Ironically, we’ve been referring to all the SUVs in our country as Jeep even before the original brand turned up in these parts of the world. Jeep has decided to start with getting their cars on Indian roads, considering the demand of such cars with the Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler.

The Classic

Datsun, the sister company of Nissan, which entered the Indian market in 2013 had a classic 1970 Datsun Bluebird 1600 SSS and it was love at first sight.

The Godzilla

Nissan finally launched the Nissan GT-R, famous by the name of Godzilla for a whooping ₹2 crores and trust me it’s worth every penny you spend. The revamped version of the Nissan X-trail was also launched and seems very promising from the looks of it.

Get in to the ring already

Audi launched the new R8 Spyder and on the stands were cars like the A6 Allroad and the Audi RS7 Sportback along with the line up of the current cars being sold by Audi. There was also a concept car which was enough to describe the futuristic plans of the company.

The Beemer

BMW launched its ultra luxury sedan, the 7 Series, in an all new avatar along with the M series and its entire range of cars including the famous hybrid sports car, the BMW i8.

Also, it had its range of Superbikes making an impact.

The Monster

Force India had the Gurkha on their stands which is the most awarded Indian car in the off-road scene. It won all the major rallies and bought the company a series of trophies including the Monster of the Year award by Top Gear.

Did you know that Force has been making engines for all BMW cars being manufactured in India since 2015?

The Three-Pointed Luxury

The three-pointed star of Mercedes Benz is the epitome of luxury and with the monstrous G65 AMG on display, along with other SUVs and cars being manufactured by the company.

Das Auto

Despite being in the news all over the world for the wrong reasons, Volkswagen did not fail to impress the crowds with its recent launches, the small yet powerful sports hatchback, the Polo GTI and the Ameo, which is the compact sedan ready to take you for a ride.

An evening in Paris

Renault, the French brand, launched a revamped version of its bestselling product, the Duster, with a few cosmetic changes and a whole new automatic CVT transmission. And since they are ruling the racing scene, they had their racing edition car on display along with a concept version showing their vision into the future.

Jaguar-LandRover

Ever since Tata became the major stakeholder in JLR, he company has been growing at a rapid rate. Jaguar launched the XE, which is going to give a tough competition to the german siblings ruling the whole. Jaguar also had their F-Type and the F-Pace out there which show the companies plans for the future.

Land Rover on the other hand had the ultra luxury SUV, the Range Rover Autobiography SV, along with the company’s current product line up.

So yes, all around a brilliant experience. That’s all folks. Until 2018.
