Her 117th birthday is one month away.

Even though she hasn’t sent out any invitations, she knows that well-wishers will surround her on her big day.

“People come. I don’t invite anybody but they come. From America, Switzerland, Austria, Turin, Milan… They come from all over to see me,” she told AFS.

Emma has a proud place in the Guinness World Records for her incredibly long journey that began all the way back in 1899.

So, what is this feisty Italian’s secret of longevity?

Eggs. Lots of eggs. Then some more.

After being diagnosed with Anemia at the age of 20, Emma was advised by her doctor to eat 3 eggs (two raw and one cooked) a day.

With time, she brought it down to 2.

“I eat two eggs a day, and that’s it. And cookies. But I do not eat much because I have no teeth,” she told AFP.

The lady has been doing that for 90 years, having consumed over 100,000 eggs by now.

That’s got to be another new record for Maximum Eggs Consumed By A Human In A Lifetime.

“Emma has always eaten very few vegetables, very little fruit. When I met her, she ate three eggs per day, two raw in the morning and then an omelette at noon, and chicken at dinner,” said Carlo Bava, her doctor since 27 years.

It’s not just Emma’s age or diet that’s awe-inspiring. She left an abusive husband in 1938 after the death of her only child in infancy. She has been on her own ever since.

She openly credits her single status as one of the crucial factors responsible for her long and happy stint in life. Her self-enforced discipline helps as well. She sleeps at 7 p.m. and wakes up at 6 a.m.

Emma is the only surviving member of her immediate family and has lived independently in her home of 20 years. However, great genes shouldn’t be ignored here. Her mother lived till 91 and both her sisters hit 100.

independent

After many years of independence, she finally hired a caretaker last year after being restricted to bed.

“She is a very determined person. She has never wanted to go to hospital, she’s never received any particular (health) care. She’s suffered from a bit of bronchitis, had a (blood) transfusion, and some stitches, but always at home.”

Emma continues to make the most of her time and enjoys drinking brandy, napping and snacking. She is also fond of chocolate and singing.

Everyone from the Italian president to Pope Francis has congratulated her. This lady has lived to see three centuries. That calls for some of kind of celebration, doesn’t it?
