The Ministry of HRD has issued a direction to every central government-run university that it must have the tricolour atop a 207-feet high mast that weighs 135 kg.
The motive behind this is to signify a strong and united India as per the Ministry of HRD.
This move is possibly in reaction to the Rohit Vemula suicide row in Hyderabad University last month and the ongoing Jawaharlal Nehru University controversy.
Here's how twitter reacted to Smriti Irani's diktat:
Students would have supported HRD ministry wholeheartedly if it had ordered all college canteens to serve tricolour biryani— Cathartic Screams (@Just_Screams) February 18, 2016
The national flag diktat from HRD makes me wonder whether universities in Kashmir will have to hoist two flags now.— Shuja-ul-Haq (@ShujaUH) February 18, 2016
