She had been in hospital for some time, but on Wednesday, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj disclosed pubicly that she was suffering from kidney failure.

The foreign minister, who has stayed out of the limelight since her speech at the UN against Pakistan, had been admitted to AIIMS in the national capital for tests some time back.

On Wednesday she tweeted:

Despite being in hospital her Twitter handle has been active throughout, and there are many who have benefited from her actions who will be wishing her well.

It’s also not clear how she will discharge her duties during this period and if she will be replaced.

There are two Ministers of State presently: General (retd) VK Singh, MJ Akbar.

“Her condition is stable. Her history of chronic diabetes has affected her kidney functioning. She is on dialysis,” sources at AIIMS said.

She was admitted to AIIMS on November 7 and is being monitored by a team of doctors. She has been suffering from diabetes for almost 20 years.
