Changing names of state and cities has become a new trend among our politicians. This time it’s West Bengal! In a major development, the West Bengal Cabinet has cleared the proposal for changing the state’s name. If things go their way, the name of the state will either be Bangla or Bongo in Bengali and Bengal in English.

The news was confirmed by Trinamool Congress leader Partha Chatterjee, who said a special Assembly session will soon be called for advancing the matter, reported ANI. The resolution will then be sent to the Centre for approval of Parliament.

“The change in name will be to protect the interests of the state,” minister Chatterjee said.

Officials have said that the Mamata Banerjee government had decided to drop “West” from the name of the state so that it does not come last alphabetically. If the Parliament clears the proposal of this name change, it will raise the state from the 28th position alphabetically to the 4th position.

Even before, many discussions have been held to rename the state and a meeting of all political parties had even reached a consensus over the name ‘PaschimBanga’ in the year 2011.
