Set in the early post-independence era, the 1948 Olympics were the first time the Hockey team was not representing British India, and the movie seems to touch the patriotic sentiments of people.

The film is set to be a fictional tale and is giving us major Chak De India vibes. Akshay is essaying the role of a Bengali (note his accent) who is madly in love with hockey and his country.

The movie is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar and directed by Reema Kagti (of Talaash fame). Gold is slated to hit theatres on Independence Day, 2018.
