For the past couple of years, vapes have been touted as a healthier alternative to smoking cigarettes.
Now, the Drugs Technical Advisory Board of India has approved a proposal classifying vapes as drugs under Section 3(b) of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
This would prohibit the manufacture, sale, distribution and import of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) in India.
The Indian Council of Medical Research has claimed vapes are a gateway to nicotine addiction. However, research has shown they only carry 5% of the risk of normal cigarettes.
Considering the evidence that e-cigarettes have fewer carcinogens, many are questioning this move by the government.
