Road accidents are not only killing humans, they are taking a toll on the animal life too. It is disheartening to see that animals are not safe even in the ‘safe havens’ created for them.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, Hazel Hill Scrap, a chestnut mare, had been clipped in the dark by a speeding car in the New Forest national park in Hampshire.

But it’s what happened next that’s heartbreaking. The herd members watched over their friend’s dead body all through the night, standing on other side of the road.

Hazel’s body went missing for more than 36 hours and her mother and half-sister found her dead body.

Sarah Simmons, who clicked the picture, shared it on social media urging motorists to slow down, at least on the roads passing through protected areas.

This isn’t the first time, such an incident occurred on this deadly stretch of road in New Forest. Cathy Stride, owner of the dead horse said,

‘We had a young pony before whose mother was killed and she stayed there until we dragged her away. Horses get distressed. It’s a very good photograph because it shows that the animals care as much as we do.’
