The man and his kids were in their family home in Sumter County, Florida when the incident occurred.

Gary Richardson, the dog’s owner, told WOFL-TV that his kids were cleaning Zeus’ water-bowl when the coral snake slithered towards them.

It was Zeus who jumped to their rescue and attacked the snake, instantly killing it but suffering a few bites in the process.

Remembering the moment when he saw Zeus after taking on the snake, Gary said:

I knew when he first came in that something was wrong, and [it] was very traumatic because I knew he was dying. Pit bulls are the most loyal dog I know of, and I’ve had a lot of different animals in my life.
