These Teenagers Shot An Orangutan 74 Times. Their Punishment? Recite Some Prayers

Hope, a 30-year-old Orangutan can never be released in the wild and has lost her baby just because a few teenagers found it entertaining to shoot them with an air-rifle.

Indonesian authorities have sentenced community service for the two kids who were involved in the senseless attack that blinded Hope and killed her baby of malnutrition. 

This means they’ll recite prayers to pay for their crime, reports UNILAD

Irfanta Sitepu, aged 17, and Salinsyah Solin, aged 16 escaped prison time in what can be considered the most lenient sentence passed by the authorities for a gruesome act.

Apart from reciting prayers, the two boys have been ordered to clean a local mosque and apologise for their actions as part of their community service.

Hope’s 4-month-old baby passed away after she was unable to feed, leading the animal to become malnourished. 


64 pellets are still inside her body because doctors claimed removing them would cause irreversible damage to the 30-year-old Orangutan.

According to the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program (SOCP), pellet and air guns are available easily in Indonesia and can be called one of the major reasons for the declining wildlife and cruelty against animals in the country.
