Shabdita Pareek

One can say that Hindi and Urdu are like the proverbial twins, yet no other language matches the poetic beauty and grandiose that Urdu offers. The Indian subcontinent has been fortunate to have many eminent writers and poets who wrote in this beautiful language. One of them was Raghupati Sahay.

Born in 1896, Sahay came to be known by his pen name, Firaq Gorakhpuri. A contemporary of Muhammad Iqbal and Jigar Moradabadi, Firaq Gorakhpuri was a noted Urdu poet and critic who also served as an English lecturer in Allahabad University. And that’s where he wrote most of his works, including the enchanting shayaris that are as relevant today as they were back in the day.

Here are 15 ashaars by Firaq Gorakhpuri.
