With ‘Batti Gul Meter Chalu’, Shahid Steps Out Of A Historical Battle To Fight A Modern One

After a historical drama, Shahid Kapoor now steps into a modern one with the trailer for Batti Gul Meter Chalu released today.

Starring Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor in lead roles, the movie is set in Uttarakhand and explores the issue of power thefts and inflated electricity bills. While there have been documentaries like Katiyabaaz in the past, this is the first feature film to touch upon the issue.

The movie also stars Divyendu Sharma in a supporting role, along with Yami Gautam who is playing a lawyer.

Shahid Kapoor seems to essay the role of a carefree man who romanticizes the dark. His nonchalance portrays every common man who’s made peace with power cuts, that is until his best friend commits suicide due to unfair electricity bills.

Shraddha Kapoor plays his love interest and his voice of reason in the movie.

The movie also stars veteran actors like Supriya Pilgaonkar, Fareeda Jalal, and Sudhir Pandey.

Another thing that sticks out in the movie is the actors mimicking pahadi slangs with the use of words like bal and thehra. Whether they have nailed it or not is for you to decide.

There is no doubt that the movie fits right into the category of a commercial masala film, with witty and slightly cringe-worthy dialogues, and dance numbers.

However, the issue that the movie is highlighting is one that most people will relate to.

The movie releases on September 21.
