After Sonu Nigam, now actress Suchitra Krishnamoorthi has expressed her displeasure at azaan, the Muslim call for prayers at dawn, blared through loudspeakers.

Suchitra took to Twitter to complaint against the “extreme imposed religiosity”.

Her tweet, quite expectedly, drew sharp reactions but Suchitra took on them all

In fact, in response to critics alleging she is doing it for publicity and following in Sonu Nigam’s footsteps, Suchitra shared a blog she wrote way back in 2009 against the practice:

The strongest criticism to Suchitra came from a Samajwadi Party leader who called her comments “irresponsible”.

“Such irresponsible comments have been made in the past also. I am unable to understand what kind of people they are. I would like to know how does azaan, which otherwise purifies you on hearing, bother her. May be her sleep is more important,” Samajwadi Party leader Juhi Singh told ANI on Monday.

Not the first time

Suchitra’s comments come after Sonu Nigam had tweeted a similar opinion in April, dubbing use of loudspeakers for broadcasting sermons and calls to prayers as hooliganism.

“God bless everyone. I’m not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India,” Sonu had tweeted.

“Gundagardi hai bus (it is hooliganism),” he added.

However, Sonu Nigam later clarified that his intention behind the tweets was to raise a social issue, and not a religious one.
