There’s really not many villainous characters that intrigue us quite like the Batman’s nemesis does. There’s a reason why The Joker has remained an icon of chaos and rebellion through the years. Be it Jack Nicholson in Batman (1989), Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight (2008), or Joaquin Phoenix in Joker (2019); what these characters have in common is more than just a pivotal role – it’s also a life lived in the darkness that has given birth to the monster within.
And maybe that’s one of the reasons why – while we continue to revel in Batman’s victory – we connect on a deeper, darker level with the Joker. Because he reflects the madness within each one of us.
