A Documentary From 1968 Shows How A Railway Strike Brought The Country To A Halt. And Still Can

In 1968, railway workers across India went on a massive strike that brought the entire country to a stand-still. The movement of men and materials came to a virtual stand-still. S. Sukhdev, a documentary film-maker, made a short film called “Voice of the People,” covering the strike. The film raises a lot of issues that were pertinent to Indians of that era. But what is most striking is the difference in the opinions that his interviews evoke. The clash of opinions of the English speaking middle class and the railway workers is particularly interesting. One gets a sense that over the years, the problems of our country have only multiplied in magnitude. The gap between the rich and the poor has widened. Development, as always, remains elusive.
