Dalai Lama Says His Female Successor Should Be ‘Very Attractive, Otherwise Not Much Use’

The spiritual head of Buddhism, the Dalai Lama is usually known for his pearls of wisdom. His words are followed as creed by millions the world over and rightly so. However, in a recent interview with the BBC , the Dalai Lama might have found himself in a bit of controversy.

When asked by the BBC’s Clive Myrie, whether he’d be open to a female Dalai Lama, His Holiness replied in the affirmative.

“Yes, the female biologically has more potential to show affection and compassion.”

But then there was a condition. Recalling a time 15 years ago when a similar question about a female successor was put to him, the Dalai Lama said that a female Dalai Lama’s “face should be very attractive”.

After some awkward laughter, Myrie asked,”So you can only have a female Dalai Lama if they’re attractive?”

To which the Nobel Prize winner replied,”Any female Dalai Lama must be attractive, otherwise not much use.”

We’re guessing (read: hoping) that this was just the Dalai Lama’s ‘quirky’ sense at work. Watch the whole video and you be the judge.
