A Girl Refused To Give Her Seat To A Pregnant Lady In The Metro. How Selfish Have We Become?

Manimanjari Sengupta

We live in an age when we’re all running a rat race. It’s a dog-eat-dog world. We’re all so self absorbed, consumed with ourselves, we tend to lose sight of the fact that we are after all human beings cohabiting a civil society.

Question is: where do we draw the line? How insensitive can we possibly be?

What prompted this question is a documentation of a recent unfolding of events aboard the Ladies coach of the Delhi Metro. A very perturbed commuter wrote about how she witnessed a sight which actually isn’t very uncommon.

She writes about a conversation that ensued between a pregnant lady and a young woman aboard a very crowded train.

The way the young girl reacted to the pregnant woman’s request for her to vacate her seat is a glaring example of what is wrong with our world.

She writes :

“I was aghast at the conversation.

Pregnant lady – Please give me seat

Young lady – No!

Pregnant lady – I have to go all the way to Dwarka

Young lady – Even I have to

Pregnant lady – I am pregnant. That’s why I am asking for the seat

Young lady – So? What can I do?

Pregnant lady – So please give me seat

Young lady – Go from here. I will not give you seat. Ask someone else

Pregnant lady – But why?

Young lady – Because I want to sit”

The young woman hid her face and plugged in her earphones, pretending to be oblivious to everything, while this picture was being taken.

Has it really come to this? Must we be so selfish that we become blatantly insensitive towards the needs of those around us?
