Husain and Anahita met in the first year of college. They got talking through some mutual friends and finally went on their first date.
Our nature was completely opposite in terms of likes & interests, but in terms of the big picture – we were very similar.
However, it was not a smooth ride to relationship-ville. Husain felt like ‘things were getting too serious for him’. So they went on a break for 20 days.
The break did nothing but bring them closer. Husain realised he was just being silly.
I couldn’t commit & went away for 20 days on a break – that’s when I realised that I was being silly. I came back home & kissed her–we finally started dating.
After overcoming their own inhibitions, their relationship hit another snag – long distance. Husain started working in Dubai while Anahita was in India. But as things got tough, they became more certain of each other.
I realised how important she was to me. She consoled me through stress. She was there when I needed her the most & at 23, I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her.
But, there was another mountain their relationship had to cross – religion. Husain is a Bohri Muslim. And Anahita, Punjabi. For her family, an ideal guy for her was a Punjabi boy from Lokhandwala.
But if these two love birds weren’t swayed by the previous hindrances, how could they bow down to difficult times now?
We wanted the blessings of our families–so we tried convincing them every day. She wrote a long letter telling them why she wanted to be with me & pleading them to agree.
Some of her relatives came around and helped them convince her parents.
Ultimately, she invited her parents to his convocation in Canada and they agreed. That’s when her parents realised how right they are for each other.
That’s when they were able to get to know me. They saw that I was going to spend the rest of my life taking care of her & trying to make her happy– they finally agreed.
Finally the turbulence had given way to one smooth ride. He also proposed to her in a toe-curlingly perfect way, owing to their oh-so-filmy love story.
She was in her sweats & sneakers, looking beautiful. I took her out of town, got down on one knee & showed her the perfect sea-shell, in which I had placed the ring.
Through it all, what mattered was that they didn’t give up on each other and love didn’t give up on them.
The only thing we can say is– breathe, eventually if things are meant to be, no force in the Universe will be strong enough to keep you apart!
