In the past five months, 1,012 cases of rapes and 4,520 of harassment of women have been registered in Uttar Pradesh, the UP government said on Tuesday.

“From Mar 15, 2016 to Aug 18 this month, 1,012 cases of rapes, 4,520 cases of women harassment, 1,386 of loot and 86 cases of dacoity have been reported in the state,” the government said in a written reply to a question by BJP member Satish Mahana in the state assembly.

For effective check on such crimes, crime branch has been constituted in every district under Additional SP (crime), it said.

The reply said that through web-based crime mapping hotspots of crimes are being identified and effective patrolling is ensured.

Earlier this month, the statistics released by UP state Crime Records Bureau revealed a 161% rise in the rape cases and a 30% hike in the rape attempt cases in the year 2014-15. It showed that the number of rape cases have gone up from 3,467 in 2014 to 9,075 in 2015.

The concerns on the rampant crime activities in Uttar Pradesh were raised by the barbaric Bulandshahr gang rape that took place on July 31, when a woman and her 14-year-old daughter, who were on their way from Noida to Shahjahanpur with four other family members, were gangraped by a gang of dacoits on the Delhi-Kanpur highway. A CBI inquiry has been ordered into the case.
