A 10-year-old boy was fatally shot by his elder brother on  Monday, May 9, while they were playing with a gun. The incident happened at Goradwadi near Varasgaon, about 50 km from Pune.

The victim, Deepak Vitthal Margale, and his brother, belong to a family of farm labourers and found the single bore gun at home while their parents were away at work. Their grandparents were at home but were sitting outside while the children were inside the house.

While they were playing, the loaded gun went off, reported The Times of India. “The bullet hit Deepak’s chin killing him on the spot,” said SS Pathan, assistant inspector of the Velha police station.

Though Deepak, who was studying in Class VI at a local school, was immediately rushed to a hospital, he was declared dead. His body was later sent to Sassoon General Hospital for a post-mortem.

A search at Deepak’s home by the police revealed that his father, Vitthal Margale, had two guns at home though he does not have a firearms’ licence. He has now been arrested.
