In an unfortunate incident, a 19-year-old rape survivor from Haryana committed suicide by hanging herself on Tuesday seven months after being forced to marry her rapist, reported Times Of India.

The rape had taken place at Jagadhri in Yamunanagar district in October 2015. Consequently, the rapist, identified as Anuj, was booked and arrested.

However, he offered to marry the rape survivor, as part of a deal brokered by a panchayat. The couple then got married in March following which Anuj was cleared of rape charges.

In the complaint, the girl’s mother has alleged that her daughter was hanged after being killed to make it look like a case of suicide. She also alleged that Anuj and his parents had been harassing her daughter to bring dowry and to pay their legal expenses in the rape case and tortured her physically and mentally.
