This Man Was Fined 75 Paise For Dowry Demand, Calling-Off Engagement Days Before Wedding

A groom was slapped with a fine of 75 paise by a community panchayat in Haryana, for breaking the engagement nine days before the wedding. The wedding was fixed to take place on April 22.

Sanjeev’s family allegedly demanded dowry from the bride’s family and when her family refused to meet the demands they called off the wedding. The groom and his family have denied the dowry allegation. They claims that both Sanjeev and Mansi had been thinking of cancelling the wedding since last year, The Times of India reported

The bride’s uncle said that the groom’s side asked for a car and more after all arrangements were done and invitation cards had been distributed.

Mansi reportedly, filed a complaint with the Fatehabad DSP, after which the case was referred to the nodal cell. Later both the families approached the village panchayat and assembled at the police station where they agreed to compromise and Sanjeev was asked to pay 75 paisa as penalty at a local cow shelter.

Fatehabad SP, Sangeeta Rani confirmed to TOI that Mansi had filed a complaint and also informed that both the families had sorted out the dispute with the panchayat’s help.

“We don’t interfere in panchayat’s decisions, but we generally see the interest and consent of the victim is protected. We’re also checking whether the girl was satisfied with the decision or not,” she said.

A 75 paisa penalty does sound like a very hefty sum to fight the dowry evil.
