For taxi driver Balwinder Singh, it was both shock and surprise when he found a sum of Rs 98,05,95,12,231 credited into his Jan Dhan account at State Bank of Patiala (SBoP) on November 4.

But before he could even think of spending the money, the amount was withdrawn from his account a day later, reports Hindustan Times.

After receiving the amount close to Rs 9806 crore, Singh had initially approached the bank officials.

“I made many rounds of the bank, but nobody listened to me. Instead they kept my passbook with them on November 7, and issued a new passbook without the gigantic entry,” said Singh.

Singh normally maintains a balance amount of Rs 3,000 and had opened the account under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) at the bank in Amritsar.

How the mistake happened?

According to the bank manager Sandeep Garg, the assistant manager inserted the bank’s 11-digit internal Banking General Ledger account number in the amount column where he was supposed to enter an amount of Rs 200.

A day after the mistake was noticed, the entry was reversed.

The matter was confirmed by Deputy commissioner Bhupinder Singh Rai. and an investigation is being carried out by a team of income tax staff from Barnala, Sangrur and Patiala led by assistant commissioner Pritpal Singh.
