Prominent women rights activist and Bhumata Brigade founder Trupti Desai has landed in a controversy after a video showing her beating a man in full public view has gone viral.

Desai, who is best known for her activism in fighting for women’s entry into places of worship, thrashed a young man because he had allegedly refused to marry a woman with whom he was allegedly having an affair.

The incident happened on Wednesday at Pune-Ahmednagar road near Shirwal, about 100km from Pune when Desai along with her colleagues thrashed the man using her slippers. She said that the man was sexually exploiting a woman after promising to marry her. But he later failed to keep her promise after which she had to abort her child.

“We have taught him a lesson as he was deceiving two other women with same promises. I had no option but to take the law in my hands as the affected woman had initially gone to police who failed to act,” she told the Hindustan Times.

Desai’s vigilante-styled-justice has created a furore on social media with many questioning her stand to take law into her own hands. Ironically, during her social campaigns, she has often complained of being attacked for fighting for women’s right to enter places of worship.
