The juvenile convict in 16 December Nirbhaya gangrape has been released as per law on Sunday from a correction centre. However, the convict will stay in Delhi and will remain under the watch of a non-governmental organisation in Delhi, NDTV reports.

While the convict was released in the evening many protests against the decision of Delhi High Court to pave way for the convict’s release were witnessed in the national capital on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the release of convict has led to tightened security clampdown and implementation of Section 144 around India Gate after Delhi police tried to shift the protesters from the venue to Jantar Mantar. However, as per TV reports, Nirbhaya’s parents and protesters have moved back to India Gate.

The convict, who is now 20-years-old and was known to be the most brutal of the attackers, was taken to an undisclosed location from a correction home in North Delhi amid concerns that there was a threat to his life. In their order pronounced at 2 AM, a vacation bench comprising Justices AK Goel and UU Lalit refused to stay his release, scheduled for Sunday, by giving an urgent hearing and posted the matter for hearing on Monday. In December 2012, the juvenile was part of the six-member gang that attacked a 23-year-old trainee physiotherapist and her male friend in a bus, where the girl was gruesomely raped and her companion brutally beaten. The girl subsequently succumbed to her injuries 13 days later in Singapore. The incident caused nationwide outrage and led to widespread outpouring of anger against the rapists, including the teenager.
