Three days after issuing an order of suspension against an Associate Professor for inviting a former JNU professor to a university event, Central University of Jharkhand has revoked the suspension of Dr Shreya Bhattacharji. The step came in the wake of growing criticism over the university’s decision.

The revocation order was issued on Thursday evening after a fact finding committee constituted by the university post Bhattacharji’s suspension found a “genuine lapse (on her part).”

According to the revocation order, Bhattacharya, an associate professor of Centre of English Language, was suspended on March 28 for “lapses” caused in arranging Sardar Patel’s 140th birth anniversary celebrations.

“Suspension has been revoked as the fact finding committee found it as a genuine lapse (on her part),” CUJ vice-chancellor Nand Kumar Yadav told PTI.

Bhattacharji was suspended on March 28 for inviting former Jawaharlal Nehru University professor NM Panini, who according to the suspension order was a “mentor” of students “who were recently involved in raising anti-national slogans on the JNU campus.”

It was also reported that the Jharkhand governor had cancelled his visit for the event due to the same reason. However, CUJ VC had issued a corrigendum a day later clarifying that the two issues—Bhattacharji’s suspension and cancellation of Governor’s visit—were unrelated.

Bhattacharji, who is currently unwell and staying in Kolkata, has been directed to resume duties immediately.
