The husband of a ruling Janta Dal (U) MLA, who had fled last Sunday from the Maranga police station, where he was locked for allegedly threatening a witness to a murder case, was arrested today, police said.

JD(U) MLA Bima Bharti’s husband, Awdesh Mandal, was arrested from Parbatta village in neighbouring Naughachia police district this morning, Purnea Superintendent of Police Nishant Kumar Tiwari told reporters

Mandal and his three associates were caught from a house, Tiwari said.

Mandal had managed to flee from the lock-up when his MLA wife and Purnea MP Santosh Kushwaha had gone to the police station, police officials said.

Eyewitnesses said the escape took place when the legislator, along with Purnea MP Santosh Kushwaha, was in the police station and hundreds of supporters of Mandal surrounded the police station to help him flee.

Criticising the state government in connection with the incident, senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi asked whether the “attack on a police station by supporters of husband of a JD(U) MLA was not a case of free run to criminals”.
