Due to the tension in Delhi University’s North Campus after the violence in Ramjas College, a street play competition which was scheduled to be held on Thursday in the Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur College was cancelled.

Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur College, which is also located in the campus, said it had called off the event as “police had advised them against it in view of restoring normalcy and peace on campus”.

College Principal Jaswinder Singh said that the event has been postponed keeping in mind the ongoing situation. He denied claims of anything being done under any pressure, reports The Times of India.

However, Saikat Ghosh, staff advisor of the theatre society at Khalsa College had something else to say.

“The competition had to be cancelled after repeated threats from DUSU. The police also appealed to us to call off the event in the interest of restoring peace and normalcy on the campus,” Ghosh told the Indian Express.

Meanwhile, the situation remained tense across the university with students’ groups holding protests against police “high-handedness” during the violent clashes in Ramjas College.

Three policemen were suspended for “unprofessional” conduct.

The case relating to Wednesday’s violence was handed over to the Crime Branch as criticism against Delhi Police grew louder for allegedly not containing the RSS-backed ABVP during the clash on Wednesday which left many injured.

Classes remained suspended at Ramjas even as the authorities claimed it was due to “administrative reasons” and not due to the tense situation.

When contacted, Ramjas Principal Rajender Kumar said the college teachers are meeting on Saturday to discuss the issue.

“We (Ramjas teachers) are meeting on Saturday to discuss and take a united stand on what has happened and what needs to be done,” he said.
