In an incident that shocked social media, a second grader was stamped with the words ‘LUNCH MONEY ‘in bold on his wrist in a school in Arizona to alert his parents that the child was low on lunch funds. ‘
In what was, according to the boy’s mother Tara Chavez, a humiliating experience, the boy was stamped with the words in the middle of his wrist by the lunch lady.
The incident took place in Desert Cove Elementary School In US’s Phoenix, Arizona.
Chavez told BuzzFeed News that the correct thing to do was send home a note. In any case, when a child runs low on account balance for lunch, they are supposed to be given a choice whether they want the words to be stamped on their body.
This is what the principal of the school confirmed as well in a response to Chavez’s email query regarding the matter.
Chavez however claims that her boy maintains that no such alternative or choice was offered to him.
The incident has attracted a lot of attention on social media, with many questioning the ‘humiliating’ tactic of ‘branding’ a child as a reminder for parents.
But this is not the first time such an incident has happened. In June 2016, a school in Alabama stamped an 8-year-old third grader with the words ‘I Need Lunch Money’ when he ran out of balance.
