Aruna Shanbaug, Rape Survivor Who Lay In Coma For 42 Years, Breathes Her Last

Aruna Shanbaug, the King Edward Memorial Hospital nurse who was raped by a hospital staff member in 1973 and had been in coma for last 42 years, passed away on Monday, May 18 morning.

The 66-year-old nurse was in a critical condition and was put on ventilator support on Friday, May 15.

In March 2011, the Supreme Court had rejected a petition filed by Shanbaug’s friend and former journalist Pinki Virani, who sought mercy killing or euthanasia for her. In a landmark judgement, the SC allowed passive euthanasia based upon circumstances.

The SC judgement was celebrated by the KEM staff as they called it Aruna’s rebirth.

Right after the news of Aruna’s death reached Indians, messages started pouring in on Twitter, and other social media platforms.

We hope she’s in a better place now.
