Surely you have heard that the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris caught fire last night, causing the roof and the spiral to collapse.

The monument was over 800 years old. The only thing that comes a close second is the Eiffel Tower, which is about 132 years old. So you can imagine how important the Notre Dame was to French culture.

But while this was a rather sad moment, efforts to rebuild it are already in progress now that the fire has been extinguished.

The building will be restored as closely as possible to how it was before the fire. Which means that the builders and the architects will be studying a number of photos and videos of the cathedral in order to restore it to its former glory.

And here is where Assassin’s Creed: Unity comes in as the unlikely hero. The game is set in Paris, 1789 and features a near-perfect recreation of the Notre Dame cathedral.

According to GPS World, the 3D maps from the game will play a role in restoring the cathedral. For the uninitiated, Ubisoft does not mess around when it comes to historical and architectural accuracy.

Unity artist Caroline Miousse had previously said that Ubisoft’s version of the cathedral was easily the biggest building in the game and she had spent literally years fussing over the details of the building.

Miousse is known to have worked with texture artists to make sure that every brick was where it should be.

So let’s just hope, it works out well and we can see the Notre Dame restored to its former glory.
