The appointment is to take forward the initiative started by Jo Cox, a lawmaker who was killed by a right-wing extremist.

In Prime Minister Theresa May’s words, isolation is “the sad reality of modern life” and affects millions of people.

In a report by CNN, she was quoted as saying,

I want to confront this challenge for our society and for all of us to take action to address the loneliness endured by the elderly, by carers, by those who have lost loved ones, people who have no one to talk to or share their thoughts and experiences with.

While it may seem absurd, or even funny to some people, this indeed is a great step towards ensuring a good mental health of the general public.
