A day before his retirement, Rajasthan High Court judge Justice Mahesh Chandra Sharma passed in what one may call as one of the most ‘historic’ judgements of recent times.
Justice Sharma directed the state government to coordinate with the Centre and take necessary steps to declare cow as a ‘national animal’. He also explained why peacock deserve to be the national bird – because apparently, they practice celibacy.
While the country is still is grappling with his ‘peacocks don’t have sex but reproduce through tears’ statement to reporters outside court, Sharma had even more amusing things to say inside the court.

‘Hindu Mythology’
- Keeping in mind that cattle and calves are weak living beings, Hindus have a deep devotion towards the cow, and Nepal, being a Hindu state, under its new constitution, has declared cow as their national animal.
- It is believed that 33 crore gods and goddesses reside inside the cow and the animal appeared along with goddess Laxmi during the churning of ocean in Hindu mythology.’

- Uttarakhand HC has recently said that River Ganga and Yamuna should be declared as legal person. Similarly, cows should be given that status.

‘Health and environment’
- Cow is the only mammal whose large intestine is 180 feet long because of which the cow milk has Kerotin which produces vitamin A in human bodies.
- Cow dung can generate 4,500 litres of biogas every year. If biogas is generated from the cow dung of all cow progeny in the country, the country can save 6.80 lakh tonnes of firewood and save 14 crore trees from being cut.
