Indonesia’s anti-drugs agency has proposed building a prison on an island guarded by crocodiles to hold death row drug convicts, an official said on Monday, an idea that wouldn’t be out of place in a James Bond film.
The nation has a global reputation of having the toughest drug laws in the world and ended a four year moratorium on executions in 2013 as reported by BBC .
“We will place as many crocodiles as we can there. You can’t bribe crocodiles. You can’t convince them to let inmates escape,” said anti drug chief Budi Waseso, as reported by The Guardian .
The program has just started, therefore neither the locations nor the possible opening date of the jail have been confirmed yet.
President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo has insisted for death penalty to drug dealers as the country is reportedly fighting a national emergency. Harsh laws have failed to erase corruption in prison. Inmates and jail officials are often arrested for narcotics offenses.
Slamrt Pribadi, the spokesman of anti drugs agency confirmed that authorities were thinking about building a special prison for death row convicts where traffickers would be kept in a different jail so that there wouldn’t be any confusion between other usual convicts and drug convicts. The talks between the justice ministry and the agency are still on.
