A 900-year-old idol of Lord Buddha was recovered from Delhi’s Majnu Ka Tilla which was stolen from a monastery in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang on May 31.
According to TOI, the crime branch of Delhi Police arrested a couple, Tsundue and his girlfriend Lobsang Gakey Sherpa who were trying to sell the idol worth Rs 2 crore.
The gold idol was reported to be missing from the house of the Head Cheepa (chief Lama).
According to NDTV, Tsundue, the accused came to Dharamshala, India from Tibet in 2009 and married Head Cheepa’s daughter in 2011. The marriage, however, did not last long and he later stole the ancient idol for monetary gains.
After a raid in nearby localities of Arunachal Pradesh, the police across the country was alerted, following which the Delhi Police received information on June 4 about a group of Tibetan youths trying to sell an antique idol in Delhi’s Majnu ka Tila.
“We were tipped off by one of the customers, who helped us identify the sellers. A team led by ACP Sanjay Sehrawat was formed to track them down. The team trailed them for three days after which a raid was conducted to nab them,” said Madhur Verma, DCP, crime to TOI.
