The AAP-led Delhi government can now expect to heave a sigh of relief as the Delhi High Court has now agreed to its long pending demand to settle the ongoing MCD crisis and has ordered fresh elections.

On Friday, it directed the state election commission to hold bye-elections within three months in 13 municipal wards of the national capital. A bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath also directed the Delhi government to provide the requisite manpower and funds to the state election commission within four weeks from Friday for conducting the polls.

“We direct the respondent no 1 (state election commission) to hold bye-elections on 13 seats of the three Municipal Corporations. We also direct the Delhi government to provide adequate manpower and funds within four weeks from today,” it said.

The court’s order also came after a PIL filed by 20-year-old law student Sanjana Gahlot, on bad civic condition in her village. Seven wards in South Delhi Municipal Corporation, four in the north and two in the east are currently without councillors.

However, protesting workers continued their strike taking it to its third day. After dumping garbage outside Deputy CM Manish Sisodia’s residence on Thursday, protesters gathered outside Transport Minister Gopal Rai’s house and raised slogans.
