In yet another hit-and-run case which further adds to Delhi’s inglorious reputation of a city with one of the deadliest roads in India, a traffic police officer on Tuesday got run over by a car as he tried to stop it from speeding.

The tragic incident happened in East Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar in afternoon when Head Constable Yogendra Singh was inspecting speeding vehicles at a check post near Shamshan Ghat near Geeta Colony. When he saw a speeding Honda City coming from Pushta Road, he signaled it to stop.

However, instead of slowing down, the vehicle hit him and he was thrown away. The car then ran over him crushing his legs.

Yogendra was immediately rushed to Max Hospital in Patparganj where his condition is said to be critical.

The other policemen who were present at the spot chased the car and managed to nab the culprit behind the wheels. The driver has been identified as Nikhil Kumar who is a second-year law student at a university in Sahibabad.

He has been arrested and a case under sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions ), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant) 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) of the IPC and 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, has been registered reports Indian Express.

Police have recorded statements of 10 eye-witnesses and are also analysing the CCTV footage of the area, reports Hindustan Times. It is yet to be ascertained whether the accused was under the influence of alcohol.

There have been several instances in the past where policemen on duty were moved down by speeding vehicles in Delhi. In January, Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi authorised 1000 traffic officials, especially the ones deployed at certain vulnerable zones to carry pistols in order to deal with untoward incidents.
