Earthquake Of Magnitude 5.8 Hits Uttarakhand, Strong Tremors Felt in Delhi-NCR

Strong tremors were felt in Delhi and surrounding areas on Monday night as an earthquake of 5.8 magnitude struck Uttarakhand. The tremors lasted for a whole 30 seconds.

The earthquake had its epicentre in Ukhimath in Rudraprayag district, roughly 97 km from Uttarakhand’s Dehradun.

“The depth of the quake was 33 km and it occurred at 10.33 PM,” J L Gautam, Operations head at the National Seismological Bureau, a unit of Ministry of Earth Sciences said.

Uttarakhand, which falls in the Himalayan belt, is known for high seismic activities. 

Tremors were also felt in Mussoriee, Ghaziabad, Saharanpur, Pithoragarh, Mathura, Rishikesh, Shamli and Chandigarh. There were no immediate reports of any loss of life or damage to property.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has asked for detailed report on the earthquake and NDRF has been put on high alert.
