177 members of the fishing community in Kerala who took part in rescue operations during the 2018 floods and cyclone Ockhi, have been inducted into the Kerala Police, according to a report by Deccan Herald.
Known as coastal police wardens, the first batch also includes 5 women among other men.
The batch had its passing out parade at the Kerala Police Academy in Ramavarmapuram of Thrissur on 15th June.
Speaking at the passing out parade, Kerala CM appreciated the efforts of the fishing community during 2018 floods. He said:
“Those who were called as Kerala’s army during the flood have been officially included in the force. The appointment of coastal wardens is for one year. But the government will retain their service if they work with commitment.”
Over 3000 youth applied for this job after the Kerala government decided to induct them into the police force. Out of them 177 were finally selected after rigorous tests.
They have already been provided the requisite training and will be responsible for guarding coastal territory and engaging in rescue operations at the time of a natural calamity.
These coastal wardens have been trained in advanced rescue skills and survival techniques and will be deployed at the coastal police stations across the state.
