Govt Introduces Single Entrance Exam For Engineering, Architecture From 2018

The Modi government on Friday approved the proposal for a single entrance exam for admission to engineering and architecture colleges at the undergraduate level from 2018, on the lines of National Eligibility and Entrance Test(NEET) for medical colleges launched in 2016.

As per a Hindustan Times report, the union human resource development ministry has asked the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to issue suitable regulations for the implementation of the said proposal.

The ministry has also asked the council to ensure that the testing process is standardised, keeping in ‘view the linguistic diversity’. AICTE is country’s tops body that sets rules and regulations for engineering and technical institutes.

The test will be conducted multiple times a year and does not include admission to IITs, which will continue to conduct its own entrance exams. The move is expected to make the admission process more transparent and reduce the influence of donation.

Currently, many states conduct their own entrance exam or admissions are done on the basis of Class XII exams. The admission to centre-funded institutions is secured through JEE (mains) conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and certain private colleges have their own entrance exams.

The ministry has also requested all state governments and deemed universities to come under joint seat allocation for it to be more efficient.
