Peoples Democratic Party leader Mehbooba Mufti was sworn in as the first woman chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.

The 56-year-old Mehbooba, who has become the 13th chief minister of the restive state, will head a coalition government of PDP and BJP in a regionally fractured state.

Her elevation to the post of chief ministership has ended a nearly three-month long deadlock over government formation in J&K after the state was put under Governor’s rule following the death of then serving chief minister and Mehbooba’s father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in January.
