The Supreme Court today upheld Delhi High Court’s death sentence verdict on the four Nirbhaya rape case convicts.

Saying that it was a ‘rarest of the rare’ crime which ‘shook the conscience of a nation’ – the SC rejected the mercy plea of Mukesh (29), Pawan (22), Vinay Sharma (23) and Akshay Kumar Singh (31).

Earlier, a trial court had awarded them the death penalty in 2013. The sentence was upheld by high court, after which the four convicts challenged the sentence in the SC.

You can read about the case, which took place on December 2012 here.

In its Friday’s verdict, the three-judge bench called the attack ‘brutal, barbaric and diabolical’.
