India has had an honour system since way back when. The Mughals would bestow honours upon their trusted associated in a two tier system of jagirdari and with the arrival of the British we had yet another layer of distinctions and accolades added on top of that.
The system we follow today can be broadly divided between five categories – Leadership, Military, Civilian, Patriotic and Particular. Many of these awards are quite well known for the qualities they celebrate.
